CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I wanted to talk to Noelle Ludwig while I was in the neighborhood, but Ana had said she was gone. And since Detective Tyndale had come back outside and was eyeing me as I walked down her sidewalk, it was probably a good idea that I didn’t go over to Noelle’s house now. I’d come back later, when the detectives and police were gone. The one person I did want to talk to right away was Dwight, so I drove around the corner, away from Tyndale’s prying eyes, and called Dwight. He didn’t answer—probably had no idea who was calling—and so I left a message and waited a minute. He didn’t like me, and I knew he didn’t trust me, so I wasn’t surprised that he didn’t call back. I called Ace next.

“Hey, Reed,” he said, now back to his characteristic drawl. “Nothing’s going on here. I haven’t seen Dwight, and his neighbor, Marge, left with her husband a while ago.”

“I was hoping he might’ve shown up.”

“Not so far, sorry. You sound funny,” he said. “Is there something going on?”

“Byron Edwards is dead.” I told him what little I knew. “I need to talk to Dwight, but since he’s not there, I’m going to drop by Byron’s work.” When I’d run into Noelle Ludwig last night, she’d mentioned Byron’s coworker, Peggy Zelinski. Now might a good time to talk to her about what she knew. “You okay staying a bit longer?” I asked Ace.

“Sure thing. If I see Dwight, I’ll call you.”

“Thanks.” I ended the call and dialed Cal.

“Sorry, I’ve been busy,” he said when he answered, “but I did look up Byron’s phone number. I can account for all received calls last night except one, which came from a burner phone.”

“Huh,” I said. “Who would be calling him from a burner phone?”

“Beats me.”

“You’re not going to believe this,” I said. “Byron’s dead. Someone killed him last night, or early this morning.”

“This isn’t good,” Cal said when I finished sharing what little I knew about Byron’s death, and how I’d been questioned. “Do you know where Dwight was last night?”

I swerved around a truck and headed south. “I was hoping you might be able to tell me that. He won’t return my call.”

“I haven’t talked to him since he called last night, angry that I have you investigating him.”

“Can you try him, see if he’ll take your call and tell you where he was?”

“Yep.” His voice was tight. “I’ll call you right back.”

My knuckles were white as I gripped the steering wheel. I kept thinking about my conversation with Dwight last night, how he’d been angry with Byron, and had even said he could kill him. It’s just an expression, but had Dwight actually acted on it?

I mulled over possible suspects besides Dwight. Tyler, a.k.a. Martin Smith. I wasn’t sure what his motive would be, since I hadn’t been able to talk to him, but there was something going on between him, Dwight, and Byron. Any one of the people that Byron was scamming could be his killer, if he was indeed conning them.
